Those black or greenish spots that keep appearing on bathroom ceilings, behind furniture, or around air-conditioning vents are one of the most frustrating things about keeping a home in Dubai. You wipe them off, you repaint, and within weeks they are back. The reason is simple: mould is a humidity problem, and until you deal with the moisture and use the right paint, it will always return.
Why mould loves Dubai homes
Mould needs moisture, and Dubai supplies plenty of it. High outdoor humidity, steamy bathrooms and kitchens, and the cold surfaces created by air-conditioning all produce condensation. Where that moisture settles on a wall or ceiling and cannot dry out, mould takes hold. The most common hotspots are bathrooms, around AC units and ducts, inside built-in wardrobes, and on north-facing or poorly ventilated walls.
Why ordinary repainting does not work
Painting straight over mould is the mistake almost everyone makes. The spores are still alive under the new coat, the moisture is still there, and the paint itself often becomes food for the mould. Within a few weeks the stains bleed back through. Getting rid of it properly takes three steps, not one.
How anti-fungal painting actually stops it
1. Kill and clean the existing mould
The affected area is treated to kill the spores and cleaned back to a sound surface before any paint is applied. Skipping this step is why most DIY attempts fail.
2. Use anti-fungal, moisture-resistant paint
Fungicidal paints are formulated for high-humidity rooms. They resist moisture and contain additives that stop mould regrowing on the surface — a completely different product from standard wall paint.
3. Fix the source of the moisture
This is the step that makes it permanent. If the damp is coming from a leak, poor sealing or a persistent cold spot, it has to be addressed — sometimes with waterproofing — or the mould will simply return somewhere nearby.
What you can do to help
- Run bathroom extractor fans and open doors after showers to let steam escape.
- Leave a gap between large furniture and external walls so air can move.
- Have AC units serviced so they drain properly and do not create excess condensation.
- Deal with any leak quickly, before it soaks into the wall.
The bottom line
Mould on your walls is not a sign you need to clean more — it is a sign of moisture that needs treating at the source, followed by the right paint. Our anti-fungal and anti-mould wall painting does exactly that: treat the growth, find the cause, and repaint with moisture-resistant finishes so the spots stay gone. It pairs naturally with a full interior repaint, and you can read more about how the climate affects paint in our Dubai climate guide. Message us on WhatsApp with photos of the problem area and we will advise the right fix after a free inspection.
